Prince Andrew’s bizarre relationship with ex-wife

It was recently announced (January 13) that the Queen had stripped Prince Andrew of all of his military titles and royal patronages.

The official statement read: “With the Queen’s approval and agreement, The Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal Patronages have been returned to The Queen.

“The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.”

And while Prince Andrew has lost many of his ties to his family, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson has constantly pledged her support and has spoken out many times about the love she still has for him.

Sarah, Duchess of York has spoken out about her unique relationship with her former husband, Prince Andrew and didn’t make any effort to quash rumours that the pair may remarry one day.

The Duke and Duchess of York married in 1986 at Westminster Abbey and share two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

They separated in 1992 after the relationship became strained and a few scandals, namely when Fergie was pictured having her toes sucked by her financial advisor, came to light.

They divorced in 1996, but have remained living together at Prince Andrew’s Windsor home of Royal Lodge for the last 25 years.

Their set-up may appear strange to some people, but they have been dubbed as “the happiest divorced couple in the world”.

In a rare interview with The Telegraph, Sarah said of their relationship: “All I can say is that we’re happy with the way we are right now.

“We always say we are the most contented divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other.

“We are co-parents who support each other and believe that family is everything. I’m proud of the job we have done together in bringing up our children and sustaining a strong family unit. Our bywords are communication, compromise and compassion.”

Prior to Andrew’s alleged involvement with convicted paedophile Jeffery Epstein coming to light, Sarah would sometimes accompany the duke on official engagements – much to the delight of the crowds.

In a previous interview with the Daily Mail from 2018, she gave details on her uniquely close relationship with her former husband.

She said: “July 23, 1986, was the happiest day of my life. Andrew is the best man I know. What he does for Britain is incredible; no one knows how hard he works for his country.

“My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will.

“The way we are is our fairy tale. Although we are not a couple, we really believe in each other. The Yorks are a united family. We’ve shown it. You saw it at the wedding [Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s wedding].”

She concluded: “We stand up for each other, fight for each other. We’re totally respectful of each other’s position and thoughts and we listen to each other. Our children listen to us, too. And we sit around the table and have afternoon tea together. It’s a very important part of our lives.”

Whether the couple do choose to remarry or not, they are clearly very content where they are.

The Duke and Duchess of York became first time grandparents when their youngest daughter Princess Eugenie gave birth to her son, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank on February 9, 2021.

The family expanded again last year on September 18 when Princess Beatrice gave birth to Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi with her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
