Former NFL Player Has Died At 49

Former NFL defensive tackle Ed Jasper has passed away at 49 years old.

Friends and family have confirmed his passing, per the Tyler Morning Telegraph — a local paper in Jasper’s hometown of Tyler, Texas.

Jasper starred at Troup High School before joining the Texas A&M Aggies for his collegiate career.

“Ed was a tremendous asset to the Troup community,” Troup athletic director John Eastman said, per the Telegraph. “Ed and his brother Shane (president of the Troup ISD school board) have a tremendous compassion for the school and the community. It is a loss for our school and community. He will be missed.”

Jasper was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with a sixth-round pick in the 1997 NFL Draft. Through two seasons with the Eagles (1997-98), six seasons with the Falcons (1999-2004) and one season with the Raiders (2005), the former Texas A&M star logged 250 tackles, 17.0 sacks, 40 tackles for loss and 60 starts.

Our thoughts are with the Jasper family and all those close to him during this difficult time.
