A former UFC fighter is now at the center of a major Canadian anti-gang investigation after authorities uncovered a huge drug bust in Montreal.
Montreal police confirmed to CTV News that Alex Garcia, 38, was arrested along with two other suspects after raids tied to organized crime revealed a massive haul of narcotics, cash, weapons, and vehicles.
Officials described the operation as a “major” coordinated effort by the city’s anti-gang unit. Police say they seized more than 102 kilograms of cocaine, around five kilograms of heroin, 20 liters of GHB, $306,000 in cash, three firearms, and two vehicles linked to the alleged trafficking network. The total value of the drugs alone tops $2.3 million CAD (roughly $1.7 million USD).
The investigation, which began earlier this year, focused on drug distribution routes between Ontario and Quebec. Police noted that Toronto was being used as a supply source, with the drugs then sold at a higher price in the Greater Montreal area.
Garcia was arrested alongside Michele Laddaga, 49, and Victor Julio Sanchez Medrano, 45. Authorities have also issued warrants for two additional suspects who remain at large. Charges include drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime for Garcia and Sanchez Medrano, while Laddaga faces drug-related charges.
Garcia is best known to MMA fans for his UFC career between 2013 and 2018. Fighting in the welterweight division, he competed in 10 bouts under the UFC banner, finishing with a 5–5 record. He faced opponents like Neil Magny, Tim Means, and Sean Strickland before being released after consecutive losses.
After leaving the UFC, Garcia continued to fight internationally, including two appearances for Russian promotion ACA, both ending in knockout defeats in 2019 and early 2020.
Montreal police say the investigation is ongoing and have not commented on whether more arrests are expected.

Baaaaaaaad Alex!
