A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the family of NASCAR legend Denny Hamlin after a devastating fire tore through his parents’ North Carolina home Sunday evening, killing his father and leaving his mother badly injured.
Fire crews in Gaston County were called to the Stanley-area residence just after 6 p.m. to find the two-story home already consumed by flames, with much of the attic and upper floor collapsing in the blaze. Officials say the fire was so intense that nearly half of the home was engulfed before help arrived.
Dennis Hamlin, 75, and his wife, Mary Lou, 69, were discovered outside the burning home suffering from severe injuries sustained while trying to escape. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Dennis tragically did not survive. Mary Lou was later transferred to a specialized burn center, where she remains in treatment.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire, and investigators continue to sift through the wreckage for answers.
Denny Hamlin, one of NASCAR’s most successful modern drivers, ranks 10th on the Cup Series’ all-time win list, with 60 career victories — including three Daytona 500 titles.
The racing community has been left stunned by the news, with fans and fellow drivers sharing messages of love and support for Hamlin and his family during this unimaginable loss.
