A former Olympic snowboarder has reportedly been captured months after being indicted on explosive drug trafficking and murder-related charges.
Ryan Wedding, a Canadian national and former Team Canada athlete, is now in custody after being arrested in Mexico, according to the Associated Press, which cited sources close to the investigation. Wedding had been placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in March 2025 following an international manhunt.
In November, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed a sweeping indictment accusing Ryan Wedding of running a major criminal enterprise. Prosecutors also charged him in connection with the death of a federal witness, dramatically escalating the case.
The indictment followed earlier charges filed the year before, when Wedding was accused of multiple drug trafficking offenses and of directing the 2023 murders of two people in Canada.
Authorities had long believed Wedding was hiding out in Mexico. According to NBC News, investigators suspected he was living under the protection of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, the criminal organization once led by Joaquín Guzmán, who is currently serving a life sentence in the United States.
“Ryan Wedding controls one of the most prolific and violent drug trafficking organizations in this world and works closely with the Sinaloa Cartel,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement following the unsealing of the indictment.
Long before his name appeared on wanted posters, Wedding competed on the world stage as an elite athlete. In 2002, he represented Canada in the men’s parallel giant slalom at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, finishing 24th.
Prior to his arrest, U.S. authorities had offered a staggering $15 million reward for information leading to Wedding’s capture. His arrest marks a dramatic fall from Olympic competition to international fugitive — and now, custody.
